Practical English Writing I

This book is intended to meet the needs of low-level, young adult learners. For many years, the authors of the Practical English Writing series have noted an inconvenient gap in available ESL textbooks. The books that offer level-appropriate materials for our university students have childish images and themes, while those suited to our students’ ages are too advanced or move too quickly. Unable to discover any textbook that combines adult appeal with basic English writing, we’ve taken the plunge and designed our own.

The Practical English Writing series uses current ESL best practices and theories for the best learner outcomes. This material has been taught and tested over the course of six semesters, and received high ratings from students every time. We hope it proves as useful and entertaining in your classroom as it does in ours.

Parts of Speech

In this book, you will notice the phrase “parts of speech” many times. Throughout these pages we will examine the five main parts of speech: Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Adjectives, and Adverbs.

Sentence Formation

English sentences are built with Subject + Verb + Object and prepositions. Learn how to put these all together to make more descriptive and beautiful sentences.

Forms & Letters

There are many practical applications for better writing including improving first impressions and traveling to other countries more comfortably. You will be asked to fill out travel forms, write postcards, letters, and create a travel brochure.

What's in this book

Section 1: Parts of Speech

To help students get a full understanding of proper sentence creation, the book starts with the basics: an introduction to nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.
Section 2: Sentence Formation

Once students have a solid grasp on the Parts of Speech, the book ventures on into solid sentence formation. This part of the book covers basic sentences structure, prepositions of place, and writing descriptive sentences.
Section 3: Forms & Letters

Practical application time! Using various forms and written documents, students are led through the process of putting word to page in multiple real-world examples. These include address writing, travel forms, postcards, letters, and travel brochures.
Section 4: References & Notes

In Section 4, teachers can find 3 Sample Tests that include various types of questions that we’ve found effective in our own tests. And, at the very back of the book, students can find a 10-page lined section for taking notes throughout the class.

About the Authors

Todd Morris

Todd has been teaching ESL in Korea since December 2006. In 2005 he graduated Victoria University of Wellington with a BCA in Marketing and Commercial Law. In 2012 he finished his MA in TESOL, also from Victoria University of Wellington. Todd has worked for Jeonju University’s Liberal Arts Department since 2011. Todd’s professional interests include teaching reading and writing, and learner strategy use and development.

Stuart Scott

Stuart was born and raised in farm country, Canada. He graduated from University of Waterloo with a joint major in History and Political Science. After spending 20 years with various financial institutions he moved to Jeonju to teach English. He obtained a Masters in Applied Linguistics from the University of New England in Australia. The last 10 years he has taught at Jeonju University. He enjoys golf, bridge and darts.

Rebecca Mueller Callahan

Rebecca holds an MA in English Literature from the University of Wyoming as well as degrees in English and Secondary English Education. She specializes in ESL Reading and Writing and has been teaching at Jeonju University for three years.

Daniel Kilduff

Daniel Kilduff is an Associate Professor of Liberal Arts at Jeonju University in Jeonju, South Korea. He has been teaching ESL in various capacities since 2009. His academic interests include the development of teaching methods and materials as well as the integration of language and culture in the classroom.

Aaron Snowberger

Aaron has been teaching ESL in Jeonju, Korea since 2006. He received his undergraduate degree in Computer Science in 2006, and a master’s degree in Media Design in 2011. He is a freelance graphic designer and website developer in addition to teaching English at Jeonju University and Computer Science at high school.

Punctuation

In English writing, proper punctuation is a key element used to express ideas and convey meaning. This isn’t limited to only sentence ending punctuation (periods), but also mid-sentence and mid-word punctuation (commas and apostrophes).

Sentence Types

In Practical English Writing Book One, the elements that make up sentences were covered in great detail. Here in Book Two, Sentence Types introduces students to different sentence structures (simple, compound, and complex) that make for better writing.

Paragraphs

Paragraph structure and organization is covered in depth here. Students work through various exercises covering brainstroming, outlining, rough drafts, revising, and final drafts. Narrative and Persuasive paragraphs are the focus.

What's in this book

Section 1: Review

Section One reviews the Parts of Speech learned in Practical English Writing Book One. Students also review prepositions and go into greater detail with them.
Section 2: Punctuation

Section Two covers the basics of English punctuation including periods, exclamation marks, question marks, commas, and apostrophes.
Section 3: Sentence Types

Section Three goes over three basic types of sentences and how to create them. Students will learn Simple, Compound, and Complex Sentences as well as Independent and Dependent Clauses, Predicates, Conjunctions, and Subordinators.
Section 4: Paragraphs

Section Four covers basic paragraph formation and provides students ample opportunity to practice writing with simple, narrative, and persuasive paragraphs.
Section 5: Resources

Section Five includes two Practice Exams using real questions we’ve used in our own classes. There are also two additional Outline, Rough Draft, Revising, and Final Draft sections for students who want more practice writing in the format presented in this book.
